The Right Opinion: What Happened To Behind The Meme? The Victim Of The Hate? | TRO
Today we’re dealing with the tragic tale of Behind The Meme and issues surrounding semantics regarding that, and boy, do we have a lot to discuss, however, today I want to also talk about philosophy too, because I think it encompasses an interesting element of content creation, and we’ll get to that in a bit, but first, Behind The Meme, who is he, to all those who may not be aware of his infamy.
So essentially, Behind The Meme is a meme channel set up by creator Kyle Bryce, don’t worry his name is public, which he brands as having the intention of educating those who are unfamiliar with memes, providing the audience with a relatively light explanation of the origin of the meme and applications of it. To take a quick example, Harambe, Harambe is a gorilla who eventually became a meme after the meme connoisseurs picked it, and in this instance Behind The Meme explains how Harambe has came to be, you know, whole enclosure incident, satirisation of people’s reaction, and so on.
These videos rapidly picked up steam, with views coming in from the first upload. This wasn’t Kyle’s first channel, so he knew how to make his video semi-competent, although you can tell his microphone isn’t the best, he quickly upgraded and realised the business opportunity. It was all going right, video after video was a hit with the audience, and he was flying high with an audience who had his back.
Yet fast forward less than two and half years later, and it’s almost like we’ve stepped into a different dimension. The happy, colourful Behind The Meme is gone, and in his place is a shell, a shell that is the draw of multiple controversies over the span of a year. What happened? Well after a spell where his videos were performing abysmally with views and ratings alike, he took a break, now we’ll delve into the details of why this flatlined in a bit, stay patient my friends. However, with every break, came the return. And Behind The Meme came back to a fanfare of broken brass. However, the video he posted “What happened to Behind The Meme” seemed to represent a perspective of hope, one in which he had been dragged down by so much, but now he was in a better place, ready not to fumble this situation. He had almost 800,000 subscribers, most of us will never receive that opportunity. He was a new man, ready to take on the world.
But then he posted a five part series, which were abstract in their presentation and disturbing in their subtext, with vague, foreshadowing language. A far cry from his initially rather innocent, child-friendly content of his meme synopsis videos. This understandably had people concerned.
Now we’re going to address that in due course, but I wanted to provide a quick rundown of what’s going on.
Today I have a lot of questions, that many people have, why did this happen, why did the innocent meme reviewer end up in what must be some sort of delusional state of mind, what were the causes of this, were these causes justified? How could such a cheerful person, so intent on spreading knowledge turn into one of the most twisted characters online.

EDITING CREDITS BELOW: New video, hope you guys enjoy, think it’s one of my favourites, but might soon find out that it’s awful, Idk, only thing I wanted to say was that when I’m talking about subjectivity, I think I make it clear that I’m talking about what we derive, but in case anyone doesn’t hear that, let me emphasise that I’m not doubting existence. And no the thumbnail isn't a typo you see we go "behind the memes" as a general concept too, see how intelligent I am. I felt sorry for this guy, so much hate from children attempting to preserve the "inside joke" ... and therefore their coolness/non-normie-ness. When all they had to do was ignore something that didn't affect them.

I feel hella bad for Behind the Meme tho. He just wanted to do something he enjoyed and succeed doing it, but some insecure butthurt fucks who cared a little too much about memes told him "How about no?" and it just ended like that. What a shame... also idk why but to me all these criticisms seem pretty far fetched or nitpicky, but I guess you have to give _some reason_ as to how you think he messed up, huh?

It really sucks that he got harassed off the internet and went down like that, how he handled it certainly wasn't great, but myself and a couple of my other autistic friends found some use in his videos even though I never really watched them personally, but it did help my friends and I who just "don't get it" sometimes

Never understood why people get so upset about others learning about where a meme came from or what it means. Such a weird thing to flex. I have a coworker who's like that. Making references to memes or jokes that nobody else in the room even gets. Maybe every now and then I'll catch one. But he acts like hes so exclusive and edgy because nobody knows what hes talking about. When in reality to everyone else it's just awkward and cringey. Every generation has its fads I suppose lol

Feel like the focus of this whole video went in the wrong direction. Describing it as 'meme cultural appropriation' from the point of view of the haters is buying into their bullshit. It was gatekeeping. Call it what it is.

I know I'm late to the conversation, but.. Jesus. Reading these comments.. people seriously arguing about memes, hating each other over memes, or too many people knowing about them.. it must be really nice to not have any real problems. It would be super awesome if that was the only thing I had to worry about, instead of how I'm going to pay my bills AND pay for the medication I need to live. Who cares about that when a "normie" might share a "secret" meme. You guys sound like the teenagers who got mad when preppy kids started listing to bands we liked. It can be a little annoying when mainstream culture takes over something that those of us on the edges are into, but it's not the end of the world and not worth getting all upset about.. and we as people don't need yet another thing to fight about. There are far worse things in the world than the over sharing of a meme you like, trust me. Take it as a challenge to create something new. Or if you're so damn quirky and unique maybe you could be creative enough to come up with something that "normies" (stupid 4chan terminology, SOOO edgy 🙄), wouldn't even want to share. Or maybe take it as a compliment when it does get popular and realize that most funny or cool things will become mainstream eventually, that's how the world works. Then get some real problems.

2:27 lol "Activate Windows". To be honest the only thing I remember about him that is hate, is probably the fact that he explains memes in the same copy pasted format, and that he explains them at all, and any case of attempting to explain a meme would mean the meme is now dead? I think there might have been more to that but I can't fully recall it, sorry.

I'm probably in the extreme minority on this, but I sort of don't care that I am. Why are memes a thing? I mean... I think I've run into like 2 in my entire life that were "funny" or even "slightly amusing enough to rate being a dad joke". Near as I can tell... at best these are just really bad jokes that don't land. At worst... it's a bunch of socially mal-adjusted people telling each other that their inside jokes are funny because if their inside jokes aren't funny... they have no purpose in life. I mean, a meme is funny in that "haaaaaaa.... I get that reference!" kind of way. Is that what these people care about? Just "getting the reference"? How dare someone else come along and explain the reference to other people so that they too can go "haaaa.... I get the reference!" in the same neutered and limp way. I don't know, I just tend to prefer the funny be left to actual professionals or actual people with talent. Personally, I find the origins of a meme more interesting and engaging than the meme itself. That is... the meme isn't quotable or usable at all, but it's interesting to find out why it was "turned into a meme". The story of the meme is pretty much always better than the meme itself. After all, the meme reduces the interestingness of a story into "corporate shorthand" which essentially removes anything actually spicy and interesting from the topic itself. Sort of like how so many people know the term "gamergate", but have no idea what it's about except by others who have told them what it's about (It's about gamers hating women and not wanting them in the industry! Which... you know... it's not. But, that's what happens when you turn something into a meme). That's what a meme does. It takes an interesting and complex discussion/idea and turns it into a couple words that can mean anything except what they originally were. I think the goal of creating memes is basically to give politicians and companies very easily digestible catch phrases that they can then shift the meanings of and repeat the wrong meaning enough times until the rest of the world, who isn't in on the inside joke, can claim it means something entirely different. A channel like "behind the meme" actually could've been instrumental in preventing such corruption and abuse of memes... but... you know... shills had to wreck the channel so they could hold onto their identity of "i don't belong anywhere except here because I don't have a personality". Probably the actual definition of "useful idiot".

The Definition of meme, Based from the dictionary I stole from Shakespeare and tried to sell for $150, A meme could be anything, A Song about friday A Movie that greets mark A trailer for call of duty A Gorilla Any chills video Etc. That could be repeated by a group of people, Community Etc again. So.. Memes are unpatented and could be shared by a bunch of people for the sake of funsies, Normies or memers. so memers aren't allowed to restrict the memes in an secret location and sort them by safe, Euclid, Keter because memers in the first place didn't ask for permission from the Owners of the meme so yes it's allowed to use the memes but it should also be shared to everyone. Basically fair use in a nutshell. So the backlash to BTM is pointless, Dumb, and Retarded.

The story of Behind the Meme is quite the story, that's for sure. Faking suicide is awful, but he did have to endure a lot of people hating him a lot. I personally didn't like his content much, I mostly found it to be over energetic and I felt it was pointless since I'd just use the website Know Your Meme when I really want to brush up on new memes. However, I am happy to see that the general formula of Behind The Meme has been proven to be able to be successful; Lessons in Meme Culture is a relatively new channel that has grown quite a lot that uses the same idea as Behind The Meme but has nowhere near the same level as hate.

You know, my main issue with btm was just how vapid his content was. Sure, its a "beginners class" for memes, but it failed to deliver in that regard. You can excuse any class that teaches poorly no matter what it teaches about. Every single one of his videos was poorly researched and contained a surface level of analysis I'm sure anybody could have done. Guy straight up reads off the knowyourmeme page, word for word. There's nothing wrong with that, but if you don't follow it up, it looks very lazy. He would also make a lot of factual errors that, if he bothered to actually research and fact check, he wouldn't have made. The second issue that I have with him is that he doesn't understand meme culture. Now in teaching most anything, I don't think you need to understand the culture behind it in order to teach it. (Hell, english isn't my first language and I've never been to an english speaking country, yet I think I could teach someone basic grammar and spelling). Meme cultrue is unfortunately one of those things you need to understand, at least to a certain degree in order to effectively teach it, especially the fundementals. If btm would have explored out of his bubble and dedicated himself to learning about the internet through experience and hell, even asking others about it, I have no doubt everything would have played out differently. I somehow suspected that he didn't really fully understand what he was doing but after his encounter with 4chan, it confirmed that he had no idea what he was going on about. 4chan are fucking dicks and the only way to counter them is by ignoring them fully and he didn't fucking do that. All he had to do was just not engage with the crackhead behind the bar and oh look now he got an infection. I don't justify any of the horrible things that happened to him by the way. No one should ever receive that amount of hate at all. All I wanted him to do was take the criticism and strive to improve.

There always has to be an "introductory class" for any subject. It could perhaps be said that, in a roundabout way he was sending viewers to other meme channels... once you have exhausted the simplest source of information, you will seek more, leading you to find channels that go more in depth. It's like old school D&D, you started out playing basic, then expert, then finally advanced D&D. Seen both Lemon & TITP's videos, to be honest, they seem like a couple of... how you say in Britain.... C@^ts?!. Like the stereotypical popular girls in high school who are bitchy towards everyone not in their social tier.

I don’t like these “meme experts” who believe that they are so different, outstanding, and misunderstood. It’s just a bunch of dumb jokes. They were meant to make someone feel good and give people a laugh, not to divide people and create a hierarchy.

Ikr? This whole controversy was just the peak of pretentiousness. People getting so fixated on jokes noone cares about is just plain sad.

Man I disliked BTM's content but Jesus Christ the constant harassment and death threats were way over the line.

"What happened to - someone I never heard of but somehow became popular without me knowing....or maybe he/she wasn't that popular?" Why not? Let's go.

I noticed that you criticized him for lacking a face cam while you lack a face cam. Why is that? Or is that just an observation? If that's the case it would be a good idea to point that out to limit confusion. Again I apologies. I tend to have a short fuse for vagueness, AKA hypercoherence as is what the psychological definition dictates. And yes I am commenting as I watch the video.

By the way some of us (well me at least) are interested in the intricacies. For instance. What is a meme? Not the description, which I already know, but the etymology of the word. Who made the word? How did this person decide to make this the word a description for images and text? Also did this person realize that this word can be read as a long E and a silent E as it's commonly pronounced or as "me me" as in it's all about me. I know this makes me a semantical argument nightmare but that's just who I am. Someone who is obsessed with words. Sorry.

When you really look at it, BTM's biggest reason for faking his suicide was that we live in a society
